Physio

It's ironic that my mom is heading into early retirement on the same day that my clinic is celebrating its grand opening. It kinda feels like this is the torch exchange in a relay race. As my mom's long career ends, mine just begins. Kinda cool eh...

The grand opening of our clinic was quite exciting. City TV came by and filmed us setting up and running a patient on the robotic treadmill machine. Apparently I spent quite a while talking to the former doctor of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Damn I wish someone would've told me that beforehand, not that I would've done anything about it.

There were these guys at the opening promoting Laser Therapy. We have the technology at our clinic but I always thought it was one of those gadgets that were unproven. Come on, how can you possibly see actual results when the treatment is only 3 mins long??? But it actual works and I saw it first hand yesterday. One of my colleagues broke a few bones in her foot and they did two locations of 3 mins laser therapy and it instantaneously felt better. Some of you may think it may be a placebo effect but before she was not able to roll her foot in and immediately afterwards, she had no pain rolling her foot. The guy said that you can see swelling go down immediately on, for example, an ankle sprain. He turned me into a believer. It is now officially my favourite physio toy. I can't wait to afford my own.

work update

I've been working for two and a half weeks now at that neuro clinic that I mentioned in my previous post. It's only part time hours right now until the clinic officially opens but my hours should increase by next week. Actually starting next week I'll be working up to 10 hours a day when I don't have softball. Apparently the clinic is trying to make a huge deal out of the opening and getting all the major tv networks to attend opening day. Craziness I tell you...I think stores around the area are setting up booths in the parking lot. It's a little too much for me. I just want to keep a low profile and treat patients at this time in my career. There's this one guy there who does miscellaneous stuff and all week his job has been to call and invite as many physio clinics as he possibly can to our grand opening.

I was extremely excited about the prospect of working for this clinic but now it seems like the place is just trying to make as much money off this machine as possible. I have no doubt that there are tons of benefits. I wouldn't have made this clinic my first choice if I didn't but it looks like money and the lack of knowledge may be hindering their judgement. There are a few clients who are quadriplegic and have no chance of recovery but yet they insist on putting working towards putting these people on the robotic treadmill machine. Yes it may help with circulation, tone possibly and other benefits but one has to ask whether or not if it's the best choice of treatment.

Being a new grad I feel as though it is crucial to surround myself with knowledgeable and experienced people. Thus far, I've only worked with other PTs who have been trying to get registered in Canada for years. One's from Indian and the other one's from Brazil. One of them is very experienced but I need someone who is actually registered. They apparently have hired a PT part time and she will be at the opening but I doubt I will be working with her much. Hopefully I'm wrong. At least I know that the clinic will be extremely busy and that I will have tons of exposure with extremely high level clients.
